Advance Broadcasting (2001)

Wine Tasting Event

I will never forget it was the spring semester of 2001 at Manchester Community College (MCC) I was taking Advanced Broadcasting and our professor had us into groups and I was in a group that was all about wanting to do our advertising group project in Culinary Arts. You want to talk about someone who was eager to do Culinary Arts? You didn't have to ask me twice, lol. Well, we had a chance to meet the professor who was over the Culinary Arts department. I knew that I wouldn't have a problem with Culinary Arts because I went to all of my friend’s graduation 2 years ago for Food Service in Culinary Arts. Our job was to film all that went on as the students were preparing to bake delicious chocolate covered strawberries & different fruit tarts (yummy). A really friendly female Food Service worker showed us all of the prepared desserts. What we would do as a group, we would all keep in touch via telephone on the days or evenings we could all meet on campus to prepare for a good 10 minute advertising slogan that would sell not only to all of our classmates but to our professor who taught Advanced Broadcasting as well.

Meanwhile, coming up were events at MCC where Food Service would cater to the different functions like a wine tasting party for example. Me & my group had to be really careful because there were wine tasters and wine drinkers. Wine tasters were the ones who could keep their cool. However, the wine drinkers tend to get out of hand a little. For example, we filmed a woman who was dancing like crazy after so many drinks (to music that didn't require dancing to it). The desserts were prepared by the trays and the students & professors prepared them by simply using flour, eggs, sugar, milk, fresh fruit, etc., to help make the wine tasting party fun! Me and my group made sure to keep our distance from the wine drinkers while we were filming because we didn't want our audience to be turned off by our slogan (just being smart). I think what made it so much fun doing our project is that we felt like we were in class and thinking about how we wished we could make good food like this. Culinary Arts is like a class where everyone works together as a team. I heard the term "you can help yourself" repeatedly to the point I almost wanted the professors in Culinary Arts to say okay "Here's y'all trays of desserts" but it wouldn't matter because I met a blonde hair woman who was a wine drinker (you wouldn't have believed it by the way she acted) told me to try some of the tarts.

I responded, "Oh, I'm alright."

The woman answered, "But you have been working so hard filming take a load off."

I replied, "It’s okay." (Chuckling)

The woman replied, "Now you are going to try these tarts and I don't want to hear another word."

I replied, "But Miss I'm full." (All smiles)

The woman said, "You have been working hard and I've been to wine tasting parties at schools like yours where students have worked hard like you do, most of them not as nearly as hard as you and they all act the same way, so you have these tarts as a snack!”

The woman was making so much sense to me so I didn't argue with her and took tarts for the road while I waited for my ride (my mom) to come and get me. Me and my group all met at school the next day and took what we all filmed on camera and edited it down to 10 minutes and our theme was entitled, "Eat It" because that's what everyone in Food Service did, it was what our group did, and what the people who came to the wine tasting party did to those delicious tarts & chocolate covered strawberries. My group got an A for our project and a standing ovation for a job well done!

Hi and Good Afternoon. My name is Paul Brightly with Sports News. We will begin with week 9 in NFL football. Vinnie Testaverde couldn’t make his famous comeback this time as the Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets 23-20 in Buffalo. The victory by the Bills perhaps saved their season and brings them back into playoff contention. Doug Flutie was 18-for-35 for 253 yards and Steve Christie hit the game winning 34-yard field goal as time expired. The Bills improve to (4-4) while the Jets are now (6-2).
The Pittsburgh Steelers made it five in a row with a 9-6 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore. Kent Graham completed 9 of 18 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown for the Steelers who are (5-3).
The Ravens made a move by benching struggling quarterback Tony Banks and went with backup Trent Dilfer, but that couldn’t help their scoring problems. The Ravens fall to (5-4).
The Jacksonville Jaguars snapped their five game losing streak with a 23-17 overtime victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Mark Brunell was great throwing 20-for-24 for 231 yards and three touchdown passes. He threw the game winning 34-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Whitted giving the Jaguars plenty of reason to celebrate after struggling this season due to injuries. The Jaguars improve to (3-6), while the Cowboys (3-5) try to put together a game plan to try and win consecutive games, which they have failed to do all season.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed what they were made of. They snapped their four game losing streak by crushing the Minnesota Vikings 41-13 at home. Quarterback Shaun King was a perfect 16 of 23 for 261 yards without an interception and threw for a career high four touchdown passes. Keyshawn Johnson snapped out of his funk by catching six passes for 121 yards for a score. The Bucs are now (4-4) and Vikings are now (7-1).
And on Monday Night Football, the Washington Redskins fell to the Tennessee Titans 27-21 at home and had their five game winning streak snapped. The plays of the game came in the first half when Derrick Mason returned a punt 69 yards to set up Frank Wycheck for an 18 yard touchdown pass and Samari Rolle returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown. The Redskins fall to (6-3) while the Titans improve to (7-1).
Now we go to NBA basketball where the regular season tipped off on Halloween night. The New York Knicks played like a team that desperately needed Patrick Ewing as they got clobbered 101-72 at Madison Square Garden by the Philadelphia 76ers. Allen Iverson dropped 25 points and Toni Kukoc added 23 points of his own for the Sixers.
Allan Houston was the only bright spot for the Knicks with 21 points, but the Knicks shot 36% and only had four fast break points as a team.
The San Antonio Spurs ripped the Indiana Pacers 98-85 at home, spoiling Isaiah Thomas debut as coach of the Pacers. David Robinson led the Spurs with 22 points and Tim Duncan had a solid game with 16 points and 10 boards.
Reggie Miller Had 27 points to lead the Pacers.
It was the Orlando Magic beating the Washington Wizards 97-86 in Orlando, FL. Tracy McGrady had a career high 32 points and 12 points in his Magic debut.
And Lastly, It was the Los Angeles Lakers over the Portland Trailblazers 96-86 in Portland. Shaquille O’Neal had a dominating game scoring 36 points and 11 boards and the Lakers showed why they are NBA Champions.

Rasheed Wallace led the Blazers with 26 points in a losing effort. And that is all for Sports news and here is Keith Wotton with Music News Update.

Above is a story I wrote for Television Writing when I was a student at Manchester Community College (MCC) in Manchester back in 2000. This writing class was one of my throwback moments that I picked for throwback Thursday. I enjoyed writing & commentating on the air during that time MCC had just expanded building a new building. Those were great memories and great times at the very first Community College that I've attended. I hope that all of my readers enjoy!
